Give me SA, I would sort it out overnight: massive privatizations, massive deregulation, send illegal immigrants back where they come from, lock criminals up, tax cuts, round up all absent fathers. In a lifetime SA would be one of the richest, peaceful nations on earth.

South African retail sales much better than expected in November 2021 after a very disappointing performance in October. Retail activity has increased by 3.3% over the past year. The data suggests that Black Friday remains highly effective in enticing increases shopping activity

SA consumer inflation jumped to 5.9% in Dec, much higher than expected. Besides fuel price, upward pressure evident in food and housing. SA inflation is still manageable, but almost outside the inflation target and will inspire the Reserve Bank to keep hiking interest rates

@Bruceps It was estimated in 2019 that about 5 million people in SA work in the informal sector. This statistic is usually forgotten when unemployment is mentioned in the media. SA has a thriving informal sector - if not for this, SA would have collapsed long ago.

Fitch revised South Africa’s credit rating outlook from negative to stable. A welcome improvement, albeit a small change. The overall rating is still well below investment credit, but the revision to the outlook suggests Fitch feels that the fiscal deterioration has abated

US inflation up at shock 6.2% in Oct 2021. In addition, core inflation is up at 4.6%. Highest level of US core inflation since 1991. US official interest rates remain in the range of 0% to 0.25%. Don’t think many people would have guessed US inflation would be well above SA

Pfizer saying their antiviral pill cuts risk of severe covid by 89%. Wow! That would suggest people will soon be able to take a pill to fight the virus. That would be a major medical development, helping countries to get to the point that we can live with the threat of covid

South Africa inflation rose to 5% in September. Food inflation is 7%, electricity 14%, and fuel almost 20%, with a large petrol price increase expected in November. These increases are partially offset by clothing inflation at 1.6%, appliances -0.4%, and housing rentals around 1%

SA interest rates unchanged following MPC meeting. Decision was unanimous. Bank highlighted the upside risks to inflation, partly reflecting the current upward trend in global inflation. Interest rates expected unchanged during rest of 2021, but upward bias expected in 2022

South Africa GDP rose by only 1.2%q/q in second quarter of 2021, helped by growth in retail activity, communication and transport activity. Unfortunately there was a decline in manufacturing and finance activity. Overall the growth is just not robust enough to create employment
