Movies have a built in constraint that is very unnatural. Some stories fit well in 2-3 hours. But most do not. Series give room to develop a story, as chapters of a book. There are downsides. Some end prematurely (e.g. Deadwood, Utopia). Some go on too long (perhaps Mr. Robot?)
