SA GDP declined by a substantial 1.3% in the final three months of 2022, more than the consensus forecast. All major economic sectors shrunk including mining, manufacturing, finance and retail. SA experienced load shedding almost every day from Oct to Dec which did the damage!

The US Federal Reserve increased rates by 75bps as expected. However the statement from the Fed provided a hint that they will ease back on the pace of interest rates hikes. Getting closer to the top of the interest rate hiking cycle

US increased interest rates by 75bps, in line with expectations. The Fed signalled that rates will continue to increase, taking rates up by a further 100bps to 125bps before the end of the year. This will increasingly slow the economy, including the US housing and labour market

SA GDP declined by -0.7% in Q2 2022 hurt by declines in many sectors including retail, manufacturing, mining, construction, and agriculture. Transport and finance only sectors showing a positive performance. Load shedding and floods damaged economy, but confidence also very low

South Africa GDP declined more than expected in Q3 2021, falling by -1.5%. Significant falloff in retail, manufacturing, and mining - all critical sectors. Looting, load shedding and job losses did most of the damage. SA has taken a big step backwards on the road to recovery

Aveng wants to do a 1:500 consolidation .. means holders will have 1 new share for every 500 they currently hold and price will (in theory) increase 500x to around 2500c / 3000c .. But often a consolidation sees initial weakness in a share price .. #JSE

So Cosatu wants to strike over job losses. Guess they will be striking against themselves then. And in the same breath they oppose vaccine mandates when vaccines are sure route to return to economic normality & more jobs. You can't make this stuff up.

South Africa’s unemployment rate jumped to 34.4% in Q2 2021 with the number of people unemployed rising by 584 000 during past 3 months. SA has 7.8 million unemployed and 3.3 million discouraged workers. Youth unemployment at 64.4%. Encouraging private sector investment critical

South African manufacturing rose strongly in March 2021, helped by the food sector and a rebound motor vehicle production. Manufacturing recorded positive growth in the first quarter of 2021 despite load shedding. Encouraging data under difficult economic conditions

IMF substantially revised up their 2021 and 2022 GDP forecasts. World growth estimated at 6% in 2021, up from 5.5% forecast in Jan 2021. GDP forecast for 2022 has been revised from 4.2% to 4.4%. The upward revisions are mostly in developed markets, but SA growth also revised up

South Africa consumer inflation remained well contained at 3% in September. Retailers have very little pricing power in the current weak economic environment. It also helps that the Rand has strengthened by 14% against the Dollar over the past 6 months

United States Federal Reserve provided impressive forward guidance on interest rates this evening. Effectively they will keep interest rates unchanged until inflation is above 2% and the labour market is at max employment. Critically they don’t think happens until at least 2024

South African consumer inflation slowed in May 2020 to only 2.1% year on year. This moderation in inflation was helped by a sharp decline in the May petrol price of R1.74 per litre. Lowest inflation rate in SA since September 2004. Unfortunately petrol price has since increased
