#OnThisDay 54 years ago the Victoria Line opened between Victoria and Brixton via Vauxhall and Stockwell (Pimlico opened in 1972). It was intended to continue to Streatham Hill, Streatham, and Norbury but never made it beyond here. More @tubemapper magic buff.ly/c0fy7Mz

Testing of the replica 1825 train continues at the Weardale Railway concentrating on grades which emulate Shildon to Stockton. Departing Wolsingham Depot tomorrow at 1030 hrs for a 32 mile round trip to Bishop Auckland. Hope the burger van at BA station car park is open!!

1202 York to KX. A Class 225 set b Two late from York to let a fast London proceed. I’d forgotten how superb the ride is on these. The train feels like it’s gliding. Also, this is what a 1st Class seat should look like. Azuma was a retrograde step from a pass perspective.

Britain used to explicitly link housing & infra; the Met railway would buy up land, run a railway there, and then sell the much more valuable land for development into new homes and towns. We've stopped doing this, but one small tweak would let homes & infra be built together🧵

Running these things underground should be illegal- @GC_Rail 180 101 arrives into Sunderland P2 with 5A65 from Rhyope Grange Sidings, forming 1A65 to London Kings Cross. Certainly a very loud departure!

@chriscollins462 @GC_Rail Even these things were loud back when @LNER operated into Sunderland (although technically, there is still the daily ECS between Middlesbrough and Heaton Depot). That enclosed roof really does make the sound echo. I remember this being a crack of dawn start to get to York (05:39)

The reason was that the garden squares raised the value of nearby houses, which were sold by the same developers. They raised it by so much that it outweighed the opportunity cost of not building houses on the squares themselves.
