The role of alcohol in sexual assault often gets twisted around and misconstrued. The “confusion” helps rapists by excusing their behavior, and silences victims by making them believe they did something wrong. The role that alcohol plays in an assault is simple, really.

Alcohol does two things: 1) Provides the camouflage for an assault to occur 2) Provides the weapon to incapacitate a victim.

First, we need to acknowledge that most assaults are committed by someone the survivor knows. How does that happen? Here’s where alcohol comes into play. A common scenario is for a rapist to target vulnerable people in a social or party setting.

They can turn on the charm and play the “nice person” while waiting for their target to get drunk. By the time 2am rolls around, if most of the party-goers are intoxicated, they are less likely to notice the subtle warning signs of trouble. Hence, camouflage.

Now to address the issue of alcohol as a weapon. There are many ways to incapacitate another person. Hitting the other person over the head is obvious, but that tends to draw attention. Also, the intended victim is likely to fight back if it looks like you’re about to hit them.

Using alcohol is much more subtle. Also, rapists know our tendency to twist this around and to blame victims for being drunk, so it’s less likely they will get caught if they assault a drunk person than if they jump out and grab a sober victim off the street mid-afternoon.

The person planning the assault might actively participate in incapacitating their target by bringing them drinks or by drugging a drink. Or, they may just hang back and wait until the target appears to be intoxicated. Either way, being drunk makes a person vulnerable.

Another way to think about it: a drunk person is responsible for any harm they cause while drunk. If they start a fight, damage property, drive, etc. - that’s on them. But, a drunk person doesn’t rape himself or herself.

When a drunk person is assaulted, that’s someone else causing harm to them. Again, there are reasonable consequences for being drunk. Rape isn’t one of them. #SAAM #TexanTrue
