I was honestly very pleasantly surprised by the exhibit. There I learned, eg of the Brazilian town of Helvecia, a formerly Swiss-owned slave plantation where freed slaves formed a village or quilombo, that survives to this day meg.ch/en/expositions…
From there, the next day, on the advise of my tour guide, Martin, I visited @LMZurich, the Swiss National Museum, and its exhibition "Kolonial", which expanded on these themes, showing Zurich's ties to colonialism
We also stopped at Rudolf Brun Bridge, where we were told about the city's antisemitic history. Brun was Zurich's first mayor who in 1349 led the massacre of Zurich's Jewish community, who were burned alive in a house. The city still refuses to change the name
The tour was actually very good at making connections between colonialism and racism. In one school, we were shown the racist busts that teachers used to explain the "different races" to their students as part of the normal curriculum
We visited places where Swiss entrepreneurs had set up human zoos to exhibit "exotic peoples", old racist business ads, and racist house names that still populate the city despite calls to remove them
I admit I knew little of Switzerland's involvement in colonialism - perhaps most noticeably because it had no colonies of its own. The folks at ZH Kolonial were great at framing colonialism as a process, not an event.
