One chronic and serious complication of #sicklecell is avascular necrosis, or bone death. This occurs due to sickling inside the bones. Doctors have begun to notice a trend of elevated white blood cells without the presence of infection in connection to AVN. #sicklecellwarrior

#Traitwarriors- Avascular Necrosis (AVN) has been reported for you as well in rare cases. However, there are less than 8 studies that actually investigate it. Anecdotal reports from people living with #sicklecelltrait show a much a higher rate of AVN than was previously thought.

An interesting, little known fact is that the loss of your spleen actually results in an increase in platelets. Initially, the increase can be over 100%, however, over time, it settles down to around 30-50% increase. This increase can lead to added complications that 👆 blockages

Research is showing that platelets actually complicate sickle cell as they “incorrectly” identify clumped sickle cells as areas needing assistance. This results in platelet activation, thus increasing the blockage. New trials are now targeting this as an endpoint. #SickleCell 👇
