"Chitra" the waiter repeated, in a tone of acquiescence, and went in. "He's going to find out if she's free" I thought. And the panic returned. What in the world would I talk to her about? What if she thought I was being fresh, calling her out like that? What if she slapped me!

As I sat contemplating my next move, a burly waiter materialized and asked "Kya mangtaay?" Without thinking, i blurted out "Chitra!" Almost immediately, a panic seized me. What if the burly waiter took affront and threw me out physically? But I had panicked needlessly

So i went in and occupied a table. By this time, my confidence had more or less evaporated. I looked at the owner, sitting behind the galla. He glared in my direction. Then I realised he glared in all directions. I thought of escape but i didn't know how to slink past the owner

The real reason was, I had no clue what to order. The cool dude seemed to guess. "Arre, don't stand here gaping like a cow. Go and have something. Ask for Chitra" "Chitra?" "Yes. The owner's daughter. If she's free, she likes to come out and talk to engineering students"

One of these, Shangri-La, was the preferred haunt of the cool dudes, for some reason. One day, as i stood on the street staring wistfully at the Shangri-La, a cool dude whom I knew passed by and asked why i was standing there. I stammered some non specifics.

Back in the early eighties, i spent a delightful 4 years in Manipal studying engineering. Manipal had many wonderful things back then. Undulating roads. Open fields. Cool dudes by the hundreds. You couldn't toss a brick without beaning a cool dude. And three restaurants

@sra_solicitors please help by allowing me a fair opportunity to be a part of the January 2021 MCT assessment as a "technical issue" from the service provider's end cannot be an excuse to penalize a candidate who had legitimately arrived to sit for the exam.
