🚨Excited to share that the first study of my dissertation work has been accepted for publication in MWR! In this paper, we examined simulated ZDR columns in QLCSs to diagnose their connections to QLCS properties and sensitivities to microphysics schemes. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/…
There were 2,600 lightning strikes in Oregon from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning. Another 327 strikes were recorded in Washington in the same 24-hour period. There were 66 new fire starts during that time and thanks to firefighter efforts only one became a large fire.

[33 YEARS AGO] On Aug 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall as a Category 5 storm. It was the strongest & most devastating hurricane on record to hit southern FL. It struck Southern Miami-Dade Co in the pre-dawn hours leading to an estimated $26 billion dollars in damage.
If someone tells you “40°C is normal in France” they are lying or misinformed. Before 1980 40°C was recorded just 4 times. Since 2019 it has been recorded 180 times. Climate step change?

Here’s a first-of-its-kind vertical cross-section analysis of the eyewall of CAT 5 Hurricane #Erin, captured by AgileRadar’s ROARS radar system installed on NOAA’s P-3 aircraft.
#Erin is absolutely massive this afternoon, with gale force winds extending hundreds of miles in all directions. The storm is so large that the coarse ASCAT instrument was able to pick up on well-defined spiral banding — note the surface convergence on the right plot.
Hurricane Erin swirls northward in the Atlantic Ocean. Seen by polar-orbiting satellites over the past 24-hours.
The open water route along through the Arctic Ocean along the Russian Coast opened in early August this year. That puts it among the Top 5 earliest opening dates, though still weeks behind the record set in 2020. Prior to 2005, such open water passages rarely occurred at all.

#Erin has taken a heck of a beating from the strong northwesterly vertical wind shear. GFS analysis shows 25knot northwesterlies at the upper level. Satellite and microwave indicate the mid level center is becoming exposed with the entire western half “cut off” the storm.

Reconaissance this morning confirmed that the #Erin’s outer eyewall is now the primary wind maximum, showing that the hurricane is successfully completing its eyewall replacement cycle. In a few hours, we’ll have a renewed phase of intensification, albeit much slower this time.
