I don't think Los Angeles thinks of itself as a prison town in any normal sense of what that means. But the backbone of its roadways was built by inmate labor. Even the iconic Sunset Blvd was cut and pounded by chain gangs of incarcerated people:

Met a 73 year old woman today. Her spouse died and she was unable to pay rent after his passing. She was a housekeeper and he was a gardener. She now lives in a park. She's on 11 different wait lists for senior housing and has been waiting for 2 years.

We’ve got to get past this “bike infrastructure is only for rich white people”phase. Go to any majority Black or lower income neighborhood, and you’ll see more people biking for day to day needs than anywhere. And usually, with little to no bike infrastructure.

In #Brackeen the plaintiffs tried to argue that #ICWA was unconstitutional for 3 big reasons. First, that it was racial discrimination against the non-Native foster parents who wanted to adopt #Native kids. On this ground #SCOTUS ruled they don’t have standing.

Many of these “historic first” awards are seen as accomplishments for the winners rather than a reflection of historic failure on the part of the awarding body. Calling someone the “first Black winner” sounds a lot nicer than saying “traditionally we don’t award Black people.”
