Like people, they can learn intricate tasks; they are excellent communicators & have regional speech patterns & dialects; they have highly developed social systems; they even seem to understand other orcas’ desires & needs, and display complex emotional behaviours like grief.

Weird brain trivia – what does a human and an orca have in common? Our brains are surprisingly similar. An orca’s brain might be five times larger than a human’s but it looks much the same as ours with lots of complex, wrinkly folds providing high levels of processing power.

But if you try to tickle yourself, it just doesn’t illicit the same reaction. That’s because a part of the brain called the cerebellum monitors your own body’s movements & anticipates the sensation, turning down the sensory response. Wonder if it’s the same if you pinch yourself?

Weird brain trivia - have you ever tried to tickle yourself? If you haven’t, don’t bother as it’s virtually impossible! Being tickled on the sole of the foot, around the ribcage or in the armpit by someone makes most people smile, laugh or twitch uncontrollably.

UK researchers have identified four biomarkers that may be used to predict the risk of developing dementia up to 15 years before diagnosis. Researchers screened blood samples from over 50,000 healthy adults - those with high levels of specific proteins had developed dementia.
