I have been increasingly surprised how Twitter kept - mostly! - functioning despite firing devs + devs quitting, not paying vendors & having trouble hiring experienced engineers. A testament to the resilience of the system built by the former team. You can only do this so long.

SimpleDB was launched 16 years ago. 11 years ago Amazon launched DynamoDB which has since replaced SimpleDB in use cases. But AWS has not deprecated SimpleDB: so customers using it were not forced to spend large amounts of money & time to migrate. This is why many choose AWS.
