The appeal system is also a very good control on judges getting things wrong or being biased. Both because it corrects errors and encourages judges not to swing one way or the other in an unfair way, or they will get a telling off on appeal

I am sure there is no jurisdiction in the world where some judges are not biased one way or the other but in my 15 years or so experience in court I have not seen systemic evidence either way of “former practice“ bias

I have seen plenty of examples of judges who have come from particular practices and everyone has assumed they would act in one way or the other and in the end they are totally unpredictable i.e. independent

The idea that judges support their own former chambers or have some sort of ideological slant based on their practice as independent barristers in my experience wrong. If anything, you get a harder time in front of the judges who were members of your chambers!
