We all need a safe place to call home. In our new @CenterOnBudget blog, @PeggyBaileyDC and I explain that we can solve #homelessness if we address its primary driver: the gap between incomes and rents. cbpp.org/blog/solutions…
Jailing/fining people for sleeping outside is not the solution to rising levels of homelessness—housing is. Expanding rental assistance can help close the widening gap between incomes and rents. More from @PeggyBaileyDC and @AnnaKBailey cbpp.org/blog/solutions…
Yesterday, @CenterOnBudget submitted an amicus brief along with @LawyersComm and @NLIHC to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of protecting the rights of unhoused people who have nowhere else to go and are just trying to survive. @homeless_law #JohnsonVGrantsPass
▶️ WATCH @PeggyBaileyDC: "As a nation, we have spent too long blaming and punishing people for being poor, for not having a home, for being evicted, and for struggling to pay their bills."
Renters incomes can't keep up with rising rents. Constraining rent costs, stopping egregious fees by landlords, increasing access to rental assistance, and building more units to meet demand are exactly what's needed so people have a safe affordable place to live. #CBPPSOTU
Hats off to @PeggyBaileyDC for her testimony before the @SenateBudget. Her insights are invaluable in shaping policies to address the housing affordability crisis. Read full the testimony: cbpp.org/research/housi…
But the pandemic relief has largely expired, and lawmakers failed to replace it with sustained investments to bridge the gap between incomes and rent. The consequences are that evictions have been on the rise, and now #homelessness is surging.
🧵New @HUDgov data shows #homelessness hit unprecedented levels in 2023, increasing by 12% compared to 2022. 650,000+ people: parents, kids, grandparents, uncles & aunts, members of our families–homeless in the richest nation on earth. Truly unacceptable! nlihc.org/news/nlihc-nae…
A recent @CatoInstitute research brief by Seth J. Hill claims higher minimum wages worsens homelessness, but closer examination reveals methodological problems and overstated findings that should be interpreted with extreme caution. cato.org/research-brief…
.@HUDgov’s announcement that it will expand Small Area Fair Market Rents (SAFMRs) will increase choice for voucher holders and further fair housing goals, as we explain in a new blog. cbpp.org/blog/hud-expan…
Wages have risen but still haven’t closed the persistent gap between renters’ incomes and climbing housing costs.
8.53 million unassisted renter households had incomes below half the local median and paid more than HALF their income for rent and utilities and/or lived in severely substandard housing in 2021—760,000 more households than in 2019.
A new report released by @HUDgov last week helps make clear why we need to expand rental assistance to end #Homelessness. Check out part two of the 2021 Annual #Homelessness Assessment Report here: huduser.gov/portal/sites/d…
“Expanding ongoing rental assistance programs to meet significant unmet need is a critical first step, starting with a major expansion of vouchers.” By @CenterOnBudget’s @eg_cbpp cbpp.org/research/housi…
Among its other faults, the House #Republican #DebtCeiling-and-cuts bill would also force deep cuts in #housing assistance, which would harm families, older adults, and people with disabilities. cbpp.org/blog/house-rep…
Thread: The #Presidentsbudget released today would provide $73.3 billion in discretionary funds for HUD programs, a 1.6% increase over FY23, PLUS billions in new mandatory funding. We'll have more details next week, but here are some highlights of what we know so far:
Examining #rent costs between 2019–2021 shows rents rose for everyone, but hit people with the lowest incomes hardest. That’s not news to anyone—but it’s important to take a critical eye to the numbers so we can direct help to those who need it most. 🧵
This year, the @uscensusbureau Pulse Survey asked about sexual orientation & gender identity for the first time. There is a dearth of data on #LGBTQ housing hardship; but the survey shows 1.4 M as not caught up on rent in the pandemic: that's 1 in 7. cbpp.org/blog/high-hard…
“Doubling up may be a temporary arrangement, the precursor to living in a shelter or on the street, or part of an ongoing cycle of housing instability and homelessness.” By @CenterOnBudget’s @eg_cbpp cbpp.org/blog/hidden-ho…
We are livetweeting @PeggyBaileyDC's testimony happening right now in front of the @SenateBanking Committee on the country's affordable housing crisis. You can watch the hearing: banking.senate.gov/hearings/price… And read Peggy's full testimony: cbpp.org/research/housi…
