@NSF @doescience 🌌 Her work opened up an entirely new subfield of astrophysics! Rubin was convinced that physicists would figure out what dark matter was within 10 years of her observations, but it has proven MUCH more elusive than that.

@NASA @esa @csa_asc @SpaceTelescope @NASAHubble Compare Webb’s Mid-Infrared (L) & Near-Infrared (R) views. Lens flares? Nope, the spikes you see are when light from bright objects like stars is bent by the edges of the telescope. They’re less prominent in mid-infrared. Webb captured this light curve of the brightness of WASP-96 b’s parent star over time. As the planet transits the star’s disk, its light dims. Though aspects of WASP-96 b were known, Webb data adds more detail to existing measurements. We can use transits to find new planets too!

@NASA @esa @csa_asc @SpaceTelescope @NASAHubble Why do some of the galaxies in this image appear bent? The combined mass of this galaxy cluster acts as a “gravitational lens,” bending light rays from more distant galaxies behind it, magnifying them. The light from the farthest galaxy here traveled 13.1 billion years to us.
