September is here...which means it's almost time for our 80th birthday season! 🎉🎶
This is just the beginning of a year of musical celebrations - and we’d love you to be there with us. We'll be kicking off the @southbankcentre's classical season on Thursday 25 September, with…
Relegated to the sidelines...
Perhaps the migration to GP waiting room chairs is more recent than Mouse thought. Ranks of now redundant pews look on enviously at their replacements. C19 they may be, but it's no reward for a hundred or so years of service #StMaryBerrow#Somerset

"All tumult, yearning and storming of the heart become here the blissful insolence of joy... until, in the last whirl of delight, a kiss of triumph seals the last embrace."

One of the greatest composers who ever lived, Claude Debussy was born #OTD in 1862 in this house in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It is now a very nice little museum dedicated to the great man. I recently visited it.👇
I’m always fascinated by bridges and underneath them. The more urban the better and this certainly qualifies as urban. The area outside Waterloo Station in London. A bit of a no man’s land, between places you want to be. A little snapshot of London, past and present.
Happy 92nd Birthday to Dame Janet Baker. An artist with incredible, towering abilities but total modesty and all the time in the world for developing our musicians of the future. A truly great lady and, for me, nowhere better represented than on this great recording of Mahler.
Tickets are now on-sale for our performances at Carnegie Hall in New York. 🤩🇺🇸
This October, our US tour culminates in two performances at New York’s iconic venue. Both concerts nod to programmes conducted by Herbert von Karajan when he conducted the Philharmonia’s debut at…
🎻🎶 Meet our Artist in Residence for the upcoming season: Janine Jansen! In this video from 2006, her debut with the orchestra, she enchanted the audience with the sonorous Méditation from Jules Massenet’s opera Thaïs. digitalconcerthall.com/artist/192?utm…
great to welcome Spanish baroque ensemble Cantoría to In Tune @BBCRadio3. Hear them tomorrow @yorkearlymusic (and in R3’s Early Music Show on July 20th).
RIP Alfred Brendel, a truly great musician. His recordings were one of the formative influences of my childhood. What a genius for characterisation he had, and what a heady combination of intellect, wit, and deep feeling. A generous man too. Irreplaceable.
Mahler’s Symphony No.6 was premiered under the composer on 27 May 1906. In the years since that performance there has been much debate about the inner movements, but few would doubt the emotional impact, whatever order we choose. What are your favourite Mahler 6 recordings?
