The Ridotto was the government-owned gambling house as part of the of the Palazzo Dandolo. This was the first public and legal casino in Europe!

The patricians vote on a bulletin for the election of new magistrates Doge's Palace. Politics played important part in Venetian life. Such elections were accompanied by widespread gambling, as ordinary Venetians made bets on the outcome of the elections!

The might and splendor of this Republic was on display to everyone entering this magnificent city.
The ceremonial barge Bucentaur is accompanied by many smaller boats on this incredible procession.
The preparation for the marriage of Venice with the sea on Ascension Day. During this ceremony the Doge of Venice would throw a golden ring into the Adriatic Sea to symbolize the close connection of the Republic with the sea, and its maritime dominion.

The Doge returns from the traditional celebration of marriage of Venice to the sea on the Ascension Day. Notice the magnificent ceremonial barge called Bucentaur!
Bridge fights. Another old Venetian tradition! Such fights were fought for centuries on the narrow bridges over canals between groups of men from different districts and rival factions in Venice. People gathered on the roofs to watch the spectacle!

Joseph Heintz the Younger was a German painter who settled in Venice in 1625. There he made many paintings depicting Venetian festivities and other interesting events in this splendorous city. Let's take a look at his paintings and imagine we're in mid-17th century Venice! 🧵
