I'd take Sunak's crusade against teenage 'loitering' more seriously if his party since 2010 hadn't closed more than 800 libraries, sold off hundreds of playing fields, cut arts funding by a third and local authority grants by 40%. Young people need cheap, interesting things to do

Some people seem out of their time - like this chap who looks more like a Beatnik from 1950 than from 1850, but he was actually photographed 170 years ago. The glasses give the impression he may have been blind, yet he still paid to have a photograph taken of himself with his cat

Mary Ellis, one of Britain's greatest aviators, died today in 2018 at age 101. Days before, I took my kids to meet her. My boy clasped a model plane. She asked what it was. 'Spitfire' he whispered. She leaned down and shared a few private thoughts about the aircraft.
