Vaisakhi, also spelled Baisakhi, is an important and vibrant festival celebrated by Sikhs worldwide, marking the beginning of the Sikh New Year and the solar New Year. It also commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikhs, in 1699. This historical event took place in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, where Guru Gobind Singh established a new order of Sikhs called Khalsa, meaning "pure" in Punjabi, to defend religious freedom and human rights. The significance of Vaisakhi extends beyond the Sikh community. It is also a harvest festival in Punjab and other regions of North India, celebrating the start of the harvest season for Punjabi farmers. This time of year is crucial for the agricultural community, as it marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of spring, a time of renewal and abundance.
