If is very necessary for a gentleman to have a knowledge of the way in which hare, pheasant, partridge, teal, and snipe are carved and served.
A knife and fork are both used in eating salad, if it is not cut up before serving.
Under no possible circumstance is the knife to be put in or near the mouth. #dining #etiquette
To take meat and vegetables and pack them on the poor fork is a common vulgarity born of the hurried way of eating at railway-stations and hotels. (1880)
The fork should not be overloaded. To take but little on the fork at a time, a moderate mouthful, shows good manners and refinement.
Take care that the cloth placed upon the table is radiantly white, the folds showing that it has been recently opened. Ensure that the table decorations are not so pretentious as to prevent those dining from having a clear view of those opposite them.
Persons new to society may master its simpler forms – such as paying visits – but dining is the great trial.
For sea-bathing, an oil silk or India-rubber cap will protect the hair from the salt water. #NationalBeachDay
It is best that a newly married couple make the wedding tour unaccompanied by any friends. It relieves them of embarrassment.
The bridegroomsmen have mostly nothing to do but to make themselves agreeable and dress well. (1880) #Victorian #weddings
The bride’s bouquet should be composed exclusively of white flowers, such as gardenias, white azaleas, or camellias, with a little orange blossom intertwined. #Victorian #wedding #bouquet
The bride’s dress is governed by the fashion of the day, but is always white for a maiden.
A bridal gown of plain white silk with a Honiton lace veil descending to the ground & held by a wreath of orange blossoms is now fashionable.
First calls should be returned within a week. To lose time in this matter is a great rudeness. (1884)
Ladies may write informal invitations to teas, readings, and small parties on a visiting-card.
Introductions should not be made indiscriminately. A lady must be careful how she lets loose on society an undesirable or aggressive man. (1880)
Ballroom introductions are supposed to mean, on the part of the gentleman, either an intention to dance with the young lady or to show her some attention.
In introducing two women, present the younger to the older woman.
An American gentleman takes his hat quite off to a lady ; a foreigner raises it but slightly, and bows with a deferential air. (1880)

Today's very late #ootd is one of my new favorites. It is this 1914-24 pale yellow netted dress with a train. As you can see in the close up, the floral and leaf pattern is made with metallic thread held down with a couched stitch. Gorgeous! #PalaisGalliera #FashionHistory
