I got to watch my little indoor field hockey team experience a full team connection and beautiful team chemistry last night. Had nothing to do with me but watching them enjoy each other made my week :)

Heard a D1 womens bball coach talk about how she intentionally goes to a game where her prospects team will get blown out to see the true character of the recruit. What do they do on the bench. What do they do after the game. She dropped kids with loads of talent based on this.

End of season awards are starting to show up. Great players are unaffected by it. Recognition by a flawed system shouldn’t be a primary goal. Doing all the right things for the sake of getting better and contributing to your team should be the goal.

If all kids had the coach’s goal- which is to build a bond amongst the team which will help them be successful in their joint goal of winning, while maybe teaching some good values too, they would find more individual success without even having to try.

I wouldn’t do this but I still love it. Teach kids to do it for themselves. Helicopter sports moms can really be a detriment to the very people they are trying to help.

I’ve had quite a few coaches call and ask about whether parents are high maintenance or an issue. Luckily, I’ve always been able to say good things- but they do check!

Something that is often forgotten, we care about your kids. We worry about them. Their playing time or recognition does not show how much we care about them.

There is a moment when you believe in your kids, they believe in you, and you all believe in the process of working towards a shared goal. You can feel it…those moments are why we coach.
