The outdoors allows children to learn more about their role as a member of the community. Adults can support children to be active, responsible citizens by allowing children to grow & care for a garden, care for/feed animals & connect to Country #SEL
Obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, ball games & sports all require children's active involvement & cooperation. The outdoors offers ample space to engage in these activities & others which promote children's awareness of those around them & develops children's relationship skills
Nature walks, mindful listening, watching clouds, mindful drawing on the pavement and any other mindful practices, can improve pre-frontal cortex functions, including children's emerging self-regulation, and executive functions, such as attention and memory #SEL
The outdoors provides an ideal setting to calm. Daily meditation, yoga or mindful practices can have particular value in nature, as the outdoor sights and sounds illicit feelings of peace and serenity, which are conductive with these practices.
The possibilities & benefits of outdoor learning spaces are outlined within the Practice, Learning Environments. Intentionality is described as an intentional act, whereby educators plan & create environments (incl. outdoor) that promote & support different types of play.
Outdoor play supports health & fitness, develops children's fine & gross motor skills, promotes connection to Country, encourages exploration, & fosters children's curiosity, imagination & problem-solving abilities #SEL
There are endless ways to integrate social emotional learning into academics and vice versa.
Whilst families may have an understanding of the importance of academic learning, they may not be aware of the role SEL plays in children's school transition & academic performance. Educators can support families in deepening their understanding of this #SEL
Adults can foster children's positive self-image through positive feedback, celebrating effort, highlighting children's strengths, encouraging exploration & problem-solving, providing children with responsibilities & allowing children to complete tasks independently when possible
Role-play is a powerful tool to support children's adoption of assertiveness. It provides children with a space to explore this form of communication and behaviour, recognise its benefits, identify associated feelings and it temporarily removes power imbalances #SEL
Kindness jars can support children's understanding of respect and promote recognition of respectful words and actions #SEL
Educators can support children's development of assertive communication and behaviour through explicit instruction. Assertive education should explore the use of 'I' statements, boundaries and how to handle unwanted situations.
When educators provide children with strategies to assert their needs clearly & confidently, they are working towards all 5 Outcomes. They are supporting children's wellbeing, their confidence & their ability to communicate effectively & respectfully, with consideration of others
Assertiveness is a crucial component of respectful relationship ed & consent ed. It empowers children to communicate their needs respectfully, consider the perspective of others, navigate & prevent unwanted situations, clearly express boundaries & understand other's boundaries.
A tech agreement (or technology agreement) is a set of agreed upon rules around how devices are used. Using contracts for digital technology, establishes technology expectations early, creates healthy habits and intentional use of technologies, and enhances safety #SEL
Families can be encouraged to monitor children's online practices, supervise & discuss online activities, create a technology agreement for safe online behaviour, discuss online issues & safety strategies prior to their occurrence & experience positive online activities together.
Help-seeking behaviours are a crucial part of e-safety ed. Children should have an understanding of appropriate vs inappropriate content & sharing, & be taught how to handle online challenges, including identifying trusted adults & role-playing help-seeking behaviours #SEL

E-safety is the practice of safe behaviours online. E-safety education is a proactive approach that supports positive digital citizenship. It's crucial that children become aware & utilize safe online practices, as they begin to navigate the online world #SEL
