I recently learned how incredibly useful it is for your own reflection and writing to give other people feedback. From reading other's work and seeing what they had to improve on, I was able to edit my own writing in a way that I would not have thought about.
#WhatILearnedinWR60
Another useful fact I learned is that adding any picture to a tweet makes it much much much more likely that someone will read it. Especially if it's just a cute picture of an animal or a really jarring one. #WhatIlearnedinWR60
The ability to write and convert writing in different mediums is one thing I take away from this class. Being able to take a complicated research article and convert it into one that the general public would read is an indispensable tool for any field and topic#WhatIlearnedinWR60
Learning about how smart crows are and how all the nearby crows will flock to a dead one will always stick with me. I knew crows were smart but their ability to hold pseudo funerals was something that astounded me. #WhatIlearnedinWR60
"Approximately 3.1 million dogs enter animal shelters nationwide. Of those 3.1 million, 920,000 animals are euthanized each year, about 710,000 are reunited with their owners and the rest are adopted(ASPCA Pet Statistics)." #39canimals
"There are a multitude of reasons for euthanasia but it essentially boils down to this: shelters are overcrowded and lack the resources to deal with the volume of strays." #39canimals
The overcrowding of dogs in animal shelters is THE reason that the euthanasia rates are so high. BUT, they are steadily decreasing as more and more people tune into this issue and practice more ethical breeding. #39canimals
At the end of the day, "The Functional Dog Collaborative's" main goal is to advocate for a stop to unethical breeding. They have podcasts with breeders and vets, as well as blogs centered around their position on new laws and acts, and even a Facebook group to foster community.
Another way "The Functional Dog Collaborative" combats unethical breeding in dogs is by providing a "Breeder Curriculum" that hosts resources for breeders that focus on physical and behavioral health. In doing so they aim to educate breeders to avoid unethical breeding.
The organization "Functional Dog Collaborative" seeks to raise awareness of ethical dog breeding through a multitude of ways. One way they do this is through their free collection of scientific literature that informs their audience on the scientific aspects of their movement.
Another potential solution to stopping genetic diseases from occurring would be to track the dog's lineage more astutely to make sure inbreeding does not occur. A lot of genetic deformities happen due to a lack of genetic diversity, so we must keep a close watch.
Some dog breeds may be unethical to continue breeding altogether. The pug is known for its scrunched and flat face but this exact trait leads to numerous health risks. With this breed, it may be better to stop breeding altogether than pursue other alternatives.(xray of pug below)
We desire such specific traits in our furry friends that selective breeding has had a detrimental impact on some breeds. However, some strategies to limit genetic deformities from breeding include restricting each male to no more than 8 litters and each female to 3 or 4 litters.
Did you know that King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are more likely to be born with brain deformities due to the domed shape of their heads which gives them a "puppy look" throughout their lives?
Pugs are undeniably adorable, however, did you know that due to selective breeding and the desire for an extremely flat face, they face a multitude of breathing issues and eye injuries. Should we keep breeding them knowing the risks?
Large breeds of dogs such as German Shepherds are known for their high energy and athletic build, however, even they face complications due to selective breeding. Because of the breeder's desire for a sloping back, many German Shepherds face disorders like hip dysplasia.
