William MacAskill makes a powerful argument against this view. Logically, it essentially is predicated on seeing the average human life as a net negative; a position that's hard to stand behind when tested.

Not at ease with a system that both incentives guilty pleas while putting so much dependent on that plea. Particularly for crimes where the defendent themselves could easily be unsure of their guilt.

Regardless of whether it's right thing to do or not, I have felt the whole "but VPN" thing entirely discounted the massive nudge effect of putting up a hurdle to an often spontaneous, addictive act that many people would prefer to do less of.

This stuff is nonsense. There's no need to either encourage or discourage. What's the market failure that means we should encourage it? As for discourage - quickest way to turn people off climate action is this kind of micro-management.

The cost of carbon is a real cost. The price of carbon we pay is far below most estimates of its true socio-economic cost. Comparing the cost of generation between different technologies is pointless if you don't include all costs when doing so.

Completely true. But equally true of much of our left. And a pretty easy explanation; the rise of social media and streaming services, under a common language aggregating political and cultural discussion with US angles being dominant.
