Let's all meet up in the year 3000 for the @MOJOmagazine Sun Ra How To Buy. Albums, singles compilations, live recordings. What are your favourite Herman P. Blount sides and which would you choose to foist upon the uninitiated? The best argued suggestions end up in the mag.
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine I came late to Lanquidity as a lot did, but if you want disco/funky Sun Ra (and who wouldn't!), this is the place to be. But as still as mysterious, scary and otherworldly as his other albums. My favourite.
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine No comfy cuddles for the uninitiated, go straight inside the hot swirling cauldron youtu.be/f607blZ5cOY?si…
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine I'd definitely go for Languidity as it's one of Sun Ra's most accessible albums (to a modern ear) whilst still being a very rewarding (re)listen. I'd also vote for the 2cd Singles compilation put out by Evidence; it's such a broad survey of someone's output (and, again it's fun}
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine The Singles (Evidence Music 1996) Double CD comp packed with unusual and obscure releases. Gives a flavour of the depth and breadth of his output. As essential to the collector as it is to the novice.
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine A Fireside Chat with Lucifer from the mid-80s is quite a nice way in mainly because of Nuclear War. There's also one side of four on Live In Montreux that's really accessible but I can't remember which one as I scared my family playing the wrong side the other day
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine Where to begin?? Purple Night - beautifully recorded big band album recorded at BMG studios and releases in 1990. Don Cherry on pocket trumpet. Non stop wonderful!
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine Universe in Blue - live recordings from the legendary Slug’s Saloon, early 70s, small band. Ra goes deep into the blues
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine Secrets of the Sun - unbelievably recorded in 1962! Lo Fi production but mind blowing playing and very early use of some dubby space echo
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine Sun Ra & His Arkestra - Love in Outer Space (Live in Utrecht 1983) I dunno why I love this one so much but I do. The version of Fate in A Pleasant Mood will melt any heart… youtu.be/u5OXWibEqfo?si…
@Andr6wMale @MOJOmagazine I love being able to suggest something with these but haven’t a hope of helping with Sun Ra. I entirely approve of Sun Ra but have never fully got it. This is a Mojo I will have to buy.
