Birling background. To Eric - the public-school-and-varsity life - Birlings use of the 2nd person pronoun: 'you've had' shows how Eric is a step up socially from Birling's upbringing. Do we detect envy here? Or a recognition that it was not worth the cost of the education?

Birling character: Act 1: a man has to make his own way - has to look after himself- and his family too. The dashes suggest a thought process - family is an afterthought. Selfish.

Sheila: is she as converted as she seems? I act 2: 'you mustn't try to build a wall between us and that girl...' Why 'that girl'? why not Eva? or her? ' That girl' is demonstrative and feels accusatory. Is she still aware of a class divide? does she still harbour envy?
