This urn was given to Wellington by the King of Prussia after Waterloo. The Prussian Service comprises 460 pieces and commemorates all the Duke’s famous battles. The urn shows Waterloo with Wellington dominating the scene before he greets Prince von Blücher.

#otd in 1769, Sir Thomas Lawrence was born. A self-taught prodigy at age 10, he moved to London at 18 where his portraits of public figures were met with disbelief. With 12 portraits in the 1790 RA exhibition, visitors were lost for words finding out he was about to turn 21.

Nicolaes Maes was one of the most inventive genre painters of his day. He was born in Dordrecht where the painting is set and was a pupil of Rembrandt. This painting belongs to a group of compositions with saleswomen in front of houses before Maes later specialised in portraits.

Happy Mother’s Day!💐 This print of Anne Wellesley, Lady Mornington was produced in 1839. Wellington’s mother is seen surrounded by effigies of her sons with Wellington’s bust on the table. A letter from 1815 can be seen in the corner, signed ‘your dutiful and affectionate son’.

Don’t miss A ‘Truly Magnificent’ Spectacle: The 1st Duke of Wellington’s Coronation Robes at Apsley House, until Sunday 10th March. Displayed to the public for the first time, the robes worn by the 1st Duke and his sons recall the splendour and ceremony of previous coronations.
#OTD in 1792, Robert Adam died. Responsible for the original design of Apsley House, Adam was a renowned British architect known for his innovation of neo-classicism. Pictured here is Adam’s original ceiling design for the ‘second drawing room’, now known as the Portico Room.
Unfortunately, the Wellington Arch is closed today due to unforeseen circumstances. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
In February 1883, the Wellington statue on top of the Wellington Arch was removed. Using hydraulic jacks to lower the statue, it took 6 weeks to reach the ground. This was part of the traffic improvement project, which moved the Arch a few hundred yards to its current location.
This depicts the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815 at 7:30pm, as Napoleon makes his final efforts to turn the battle in his favour. Considered one of the 'most valuable' battle pictures ever painted, when Wellington bought it he commented it was 'very good; not too much smoke'

This urn was given to Wellington by the King of Prussia after Waterloo. The Prussian Service comprises 460 pieces and commemorates all the Duke’s famous battles. The urn shows Waterloo with Wellington dominating the scene before he greets Prince von Blücher.
We owe this man a huge debt in an age of growing celebrity that pre-dated photography. Lawrence’s depictions of Wellington always seem so much closer to the man, and more human, than portraits by his contemporaries.
#otd in 1769, Sir Thomas Lawrence was born. A self-taught prodigy at age 10, he moved to London at 18 where his portraits of public figures were met with disbelief. With 12 portraits in the 1790 RA exhibition, visitors were lost for words finding out he was about to turn 21.

I went to @ApsleyHouse, aka No 1 London, the home of the 1st Duke of Wellington. In the entrance hall is his nemesis, a statue of Napoleon. Bonaparte didn't like it...it was 'too muscular' he thought. It was also pretty mas-ss-sive! @LandmarkTrust @FondaNapoleon

Best bit was the hand painted ‘divorce gift’ Napoleon sent to Josephine which ended up being sent to the Duke of Wellington because ‘little gifts keep friendships alive’ (in english and underlined).

The passing of George III, coming five years after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, would begin a period of massive change, culminating in the reign of Victoria, which began 17 years later.
#OnThisDay in 1820, George III passed away at Windsor Castle, after a reign of almost 60 years. This impressive state portrait of the King in his velvet and gold brocade coronation attire, painted by Allan Ramsay, is displayed at the top of the staircase.
@ApsleyHouse Worcester received a copy when the King attended the oldest music festival in the world - the Three Choirs Festival. It was gifted to be displayed at the Guildhall. Its still there today.

Beautiful or frightful?🐉 These striking doorcases in the Waterloo Gallery were designed by Harriet Arbuthnot and shaped by the architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt. Finished with Chinoiserie dragons, Wyatt's elaborate Louis XIV style inclined Arbuthnot to call them 'frightful'.
