The #PATprotein catalyzes the acetylation of glufosinate and converts it into a nontoxic form that can't interfere with the plant’s metabolism. Crops expressing the #patgene can tolerate glufosinate application, leading to a better #weedcontrol without damaging the crops.
This #PATprotein confers resistance to glufosinate- ammonium, a broad-spectrum herbicide that inhibits the activity of glutamine synthetase in plants, leading to the accumulation of toxic levels of ammonia and eventually causing plant death. #HerbicideResistance #CropScience
