To summarize, though I fully empathize with the concerns of Industry leaders, I am humbly suggesting that the said debate should shift focus from the number of working hours to instilling a sense of purpose in organizations.

Assuming we can effectively attach the emotions of employees to their respective work, I feel the number of working hours will become a redundant number. There are enough anecdotes available where the sense of purpose was the driving force towards success of organizations.

Should we not instill a sense of purpose in employees so that they know the reason why they come to work daily morning? Will a student get high marks by spending more hours on studying or by putting more heart into studying????

Can I get more productivity from an employee who is there just to get his pay cheque by increasing his working hours??? I think the answer is anybody’s guess. To increase productivity, should we not try to increase the emotional level of employees towards their work??

To me, Hard work has more to do with the emotional attachment to work than the intellectual abilities. It is more about utilizing our 24 hours a day more efficiently.

But am I disparaging the concerns of Industry leaders who are proposing longer working hours?? I am not. I resonate with their concern that to become Viksit Bharat, we need to work hard. What I am getting into is that hard work does not necessarily mean longer working hours.

We are living in a society where professional and personal lives are like equal cogs of the same vehicle. Can we say that if any cog goes out of alignment, vehicle will move?? I am afraid not. We need a healthy society to thrive healthy businesses.

To the best of my knowledge there is no evidence that the increased number of working hours result in increased productivity. Even in my professional life I did not observe any such correlation.

It seems while we are clinging on to no of hours, we are probably forgetting that it is more about productivity which we are bothered about. Is there any direct correlation between the number of working hours and productivity.

How many hours we should work There is a raging debate about how many hours we are supposed to work in a week. Some say 70 hours, some say 90 hours!!! But is the debate really about the number of hours or is it about productivity?
