"The way to let veterans in is legally... There is no reason to support an illegal route with people smugglers." Defence Secretary Grant Shapps discusses the Lords' amendment to the Rwanda bill, which would exempt Afghan veterans from being forcibly deported. #R4Today
@BBCr4today Doesn’t this argument apply to all immigrants? If there was a straightforward legal route there would be no demand for people smugglers.
@BBCr4today @BBCPolitics But why do veterans feel the need to enter illegally? Are they not getting the legal support and fair access they are entitled to? Or is Schapps saying these veterans are not valid/not legitimate?
@BBCr4today But we don't seem to be helping these veterans to come in legally! Rather shamefully we seem to have abandoned them!
@BBCr4today Once an asylum seeker is here, the route they may have been forced to take is irrelevant. We don't want them having to risk their lives, but does Shapps really mean 'unapproved' routes? Whichever, provide more 'legal'/approved routes. #R4Today x.com/adrianfaiers/s…

@BBCr4today The bbc and none of its interviewees ever express the view that 🇬🇧 should be focused on keeping migrants out and deporting many who are already here Just variations on a theme of how to filter them, if at all, and all on the assumption that reducing or stopping them is wrong
@BBCr4today Am I right in saying that Israel had a Rwanda scheme in 2018. It lasted a year.
@BBCr4today Internet scammer says what?
@BBCr4today Why has today's programme been removed from iplayer?
