I keep hearing of "The Internet" and "The Genome" as reasons why it's so important for the Government to fund research. I'm not hearing much discussion of the costs of these advances (crowding out, misguided work - string theory, and counter-productive work - gain of function).

Latest annual report of the government controlled Spanish electric grid provider - Medium-to-Large risk from the closure of conventional power generation capacity and growth of renewables. But the director of the grid is certain that green policies did not cause the black-out.
After half a day of nationwide power black-out in Spain - it's good to have battery lanterns around and downloaded cartoons for the kids. Now we await for the media to tell us that "there was a lab in Spain researching black-outs, but it definitely did not cause this one".

US Tariffs as a solution to the underlying problem of overconsumption and undersaving (/overleveraging) by US individuals as akin to putting a very tight belt onto an individual that is overeating and underexercising. The pain *might* make them rethink their eating and exercise.

There is an enormous amount of tension embedded in the American economics and financial system (debt, deficits, derivatives, lack of savings, lack of freedom and dynamism, geopolitics, etc). And the problem of the tariffs is that extra bit tension which can bring about a "stroke"
