The vast Steart Marshes restoration at Bridgwater, Somerset, is an extraordinary success story, working with rather than against nature to protect communities from flooding. In fact this is among the most ambitious, largest and most successful natural flood protection projects in the world. Nature-friendly farming continues here in this beautiful waterscape. Guess how many times local MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has visited the project, which he describes as ‘Disney for Ducks’? You guessed it. Zero. This is the kind of fuckwittery which surrounds pretty much each and every project of this kind, wherever you go. (Incidentally, you can be sure Liddell-Grainger would be delighted if it were a heavily subsidised ‘Disney for Sheep’) We just need better politicians across the parties.
Go and visit the Steart Marshes! wwt.org.uk/wetland-centre… @WWTSteart
@BenGoldsmith I wouldn’t say it’s one of the biggest most ambitious in the World but a good example of what can be done. The Severn Estuary is a very favorable location for #saltmarsh #restoration. A step towards much bigger actions.
@BenGoldsmith Ahh. The property developer MP….. He sees nothing but £’s…..
@BenGoldsmith In Somerset later this week, will go and visit 🙂
@BenGoldsmith Let's not create false equivalences. This attitude towards nature skews heavily Tory.
@BenGoldsmith It’s a magical place
@BenGoldsmith Ben if it's beside the sea, how does it help flooding?
@BenGoldsmith I’m genuinely confused. Wetlands are supposed to sequester more carbon than forests. Yet the greatest source of methane in the atmosphere is naturally released from wetlands. Hoping for expert clarification on this.
@BenGoldsmith @IanLG_MP was a property developer, viewing biodiversity enhancement as the devils work
@BenGoldsmith That's an amazing place.
