New city report says estimated cost of Toronto hosting the 2026 World Cup has risen to $380 million, up from earlier estimate of $300 million. New price tag accounts for TO getting six games instead of five, as well as refined estimates for hosting duties, security, inflation.
Report, which will go to Mayor Chow's executive committee on Thursday, is here: toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2…
@BenSpurr Yeah, I'm totally convinced that spending my tax money so dudes can kick a ball is so much more useful than, say, re-paving Eglinton Ave from one end to the other.
@BenSpurr Tremendous waste of money. Tory's Folly.
@BenSpurr we should simply cancel this john tory/rogers/mlse cash grab.
@BenSpurr Absolutely ridiculous that Toronto and Ford agreed to put out this kind of money to host a few meaningless games.
@BenSpurr I don’t understand the deal that Toronto made to host this event. It is costing the city yet it will get no tax revenue from it. All the economic gains will go to private interests. Why isn’t Toronto implementing an event tax on hotels and restaurants for the period of the games?
@BenSpurr @TorontoStar I bet the taxpayers $$$ will be dishing out $1B when all is done. Just wait and see, as greedy hands will be asking for more.
@BenSpurr Big mistake, we should learn from Olympics and other events that have similar characteristics. We can just watch on TV as the games take place in places that have been stung by the hype
