So... I tallied up my spending at #ECCC. I spent ~$720. $65 of that was the ultimate con hoodie (so many pockets!), the rest was art/books/comics.

Anyone started a Thief recently? From what I can tell it is not possible to learn Utility or Augmentation from Intro Khri. Is it literally impossible to level up with out magic classes?

If you don’t, be prepared to lose a large portion of your market to @Kickstarter’s @drip platform. You probably will anyway, but alienating your Patrons and Creators while a competitor is preparing to enter the market is basically corporate suicide.

Essentially, @Patreon, this change in policy seems ill-conceived. With a few hours of thought, better alternatives present themselves. Unless, of course, your stated goals are lies, and you’re doing a money grab like many people believe. Prove them wrong, fix it correctly.

Alternatively, lower the minimum pledge (currently $1) to fifty cents, so Creators can adjust that level so they keep a fee. Or just give Creators the option of taking on those fees.

This prevents people from getting content with out paying, it stops the confusion of getting charged again very quickly, and it keeps the batched charges that minimize fees. Keeping the fees paid by Creators means people can continue backing at $1, instead of $1.38.

So let me instead give @Patreon a suggestion. Don’t make this stupid change. Keep fees on Creators (every creator has told me they’d prefer this). Change initial backing so that you’re charged immediately, but not again for at least 28 days. Keep batched charges on the 1st.

So, these might seem reasonable, but combined they create a huge increase in cost to Patrons. Even if Patreon doesn’t get that money (and I’m not 100% sure they won’t get some of it), this is already having a huge impact on Creators, and it doesn’t even change for 10 days.

@Patreon The second problem they were trying to address is that it’s occasionally possible to get content without ever paying. Their solution, switch to an anniversary system so that you’re always charged on the anniversary of your pledge.

So it sounds like @Patreon is trying to fix two problems (and failing to communicate with anybody). The first problem is the variance Creators see due to fees. The solution: move the fees to the Patrons. It should have been obvious this would cause many Patrons to leave.

This looks like a blatant money grab by Patreon, which will hurt the Creators. Please reconsider. This is a huge change, with less than a month’s notice.
