How much of our streets have we surrendered to cars, and how unsafe or uncomfortable does it make us feel as pedestrians (or bike riders) as a result? This iconic graphic makes that point powerfully, by Swedish artist Karl Jilg and commissioned by the Swedish Road Administration.
@BrentToderian I was just in Crete, and there are no pavements at all in most places, and very narrow roads. Doesn’t impede driving panache though.
@BrentToderian @BlackIslePMD Not only that, but our own space is surrendered to rogue parking/cycling, A-frame advertising/signalling, lamp posts, sign posts, & much more, that could/should be situated elsewhere. (Apologies to Jilg for vandalising his perfect picture.) #Pedestrians #ThePermanentAfterthought
@BrentToderian 1.3 MILLION pedestrians killed by car drivers. EVERY. YEAR.
@BrentToderian A version of this cartoon for Marseille, would have the sidewalks 1/3 the width; have invisible boards across the road, as the pedestrian crossings are too dirty to actually see them… giant rocks half across what is left of the sidewalks to represent the cars parked on them. 😭
@BrentToderian I learned recently that the term "Jay walking" was coined in order to make pedestrian deaths seem like the walkers are at fault. Pure marketing.
@BrentToderian @IanDunt Note no bikes endangering pedestrians.....
@BrentToderian @BenGoldsmith Like it! I've given my car up, saving £100 a week of fuel, using my bicycle, bus and train. I do an online shop once a month to for the heavy or bulky stuff which is delivered to my front door.
@BrentToderian I might go so far as to say this is understated... in that a void can't just up on the sidewalk and hit a pedestrian there. I know that's not the point, but that doesn't mean it's wrong either...
@BrentToderian @david_hewson The future of serving traffic…
@BrentToderian I’d love to have the same graphic adapted to #Paris with one of those illegal but “tolerated” terrasses on the entire width of the pavement.
@BrentToderian @IanDunt We need more tunnels. Hi @elonmusk Any plans to give us all an update on the latest tunnel boring machine technology? How many tunnel-chomping machines have you made?👇🏻 What is your prototype pipeline looking like? Have you investigated advanced techniques such as lasers?⚡️
@BrentToderian That is extremely deceiving. You are not safe walking on side walks. Plenty of people die because cars jump on sidewalks
@BrentToderian We don't think about this day-to-day, but so true, unfortunately.
@BrentToderian Seeing this after returning from shopping using the cycleway - till it ran out, whereupon I got yelled at by a motorist apparently unable to easily & quickly overtake with my packed panniers. Drivers like MA21 XRL are sadly common - and need to consider this graphic
@BrentToderian It sounds very deep, but it’s absurd.
@BrentToderian A city cannot function without a means of getting goods and people in and out, try doing that without transport,a city is not just a bigger village
@BrentToderian @IanDunt “Surrendered” is highly emotive language. Motor transport grew over half a century, and made modern economies possible.
@BrentToderian @IanDunt There's one thing Vancouver never looked like that.
