Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via @StreetsblogUSA usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/pro…
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA Nobody drives. Nobody gets hurt.
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA “Bikers” need to be mandated to carry insurance and mandatory helmet as a minimum given the amount of road space they are being “given”.
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA were those with real metal bollards or the plastic twigs we have?
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA Not to mention that the NHTSA just did a huge multi-city study and confirmed the same thing.
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA The data on sharrows is disappointing. They “feel” safer than nothing and I can’t help but think they wake drivers up to the fact that bikes are valid road users too.
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA or just don’t ride bicycles on streets. Streets are made for automobiles.
@BrentToderian @IngaSaffron @StreetsblogUSA @stcif01 @awwhalen "For sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them." - any chance of rethinking the direction Lancaster City has been heading - particularly Water Street?
@BrentToderian @WilliamNB @StreetsblogUSA Yes, painted bike lanes just mean that drivers think they can pass you as close as they like as long as they don't go over the white line! Also, they are not maintained properly - covered in crap - stones, glass, bits of metal + encroached on by vegetation!
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA Bike lanes are a no-brainer! So glad I live in The Netherlands 🚲 with all it’s great bike lanes, like this one:
@BrentToderian @StreetsblogUSA Imagine that corridor before the protected bike lane - and how much more of a racetrack it was. So of course it's now safer for motorists too.
