I’m frequently asked if additional education is valuable for an urbanist or city planner beyond the degree(s). I always recommend as much education, training, experience and practice you can get in the areas of communication (all forms), persuasiveness and strategic thinking.
@BrentToderian Some design education. Too many are focused on policy, and consequently design guides are shocking...
@BrentToderian For a number of years I used to give an annual guest lecture at the University of Waterloo School of Planning on the importance of communications skills for planners … it was always a lot of fun!
@BrentToderian Fine advice. Add a wrkshp (minm) on a core tension in urban planning: call it 'Social Psychy sumpn.' You all must be 'The Expert' to succeed. ✔️ Yet to create great envts "I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is to plan with the community." (L Beasely). Nor can I.
@BrentToderian well, they need to actually understand building codes & basic finance for starters.
@BrentToderian @JasonThorne_RPP I will add it to my résumé after I get my masters degree. ;-)
@BrentToderian @JasonThorne_RPP Excellent advice in most fields.
@BrentToderian Not the best journal to publish this, but we found that in Switzerland there is a lack of pre graduate training in certain areas that merits further training : mdpi.com/1660-4601/18/1…
