Third year running General Entomology lab, second year having no idea how I want to teach Lepidoptera ID

Statistical pet peeves (especially in ecology) that I should drill into students' brains early? We're not doing stats in great depth, but we are spending time on how to think carefully about data, etc. I'm already going to yell about ordinal data a lot

Was telling my students about how entomology collections share specimens and send things around, one said "it's like Pokémon," so naturally I got to tell them about how Pokémon was based on insect collecting in the first place

Something I've never quite understood myself - for insect nymphs very similar to the adults (Heteroptera, Blattodea, etc.), why do the nymphs shrivel when pinned, and adults don't? Something different about the chitin before that final stage? @americanbeetles @CorrieMoreau ?

As an immunocompromised journalist the framing of “prepare to get sick” blows my mind. Why can’t we frame these stories as “here’s how to lessen the risk of getting sick AND be ready for if/when it does happen?” Both are important!

@KathTX @joveest @CallaHummel I am on APSA Council and a number of us argued hard for honoring the strike, but lost. Also, the Council did not vote on the statement, it was issued after the meeting today. The statement does not reflect my views (it's so tone deaf). Sorry we failed
