Excited to share a new guide from @Everytown and @TheHAVI for building a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP), including how to budget for and staff these lifesaving programs. #CommunitySafety everytownsupportfund.org/press/everytow…
HVIPs reduce repeat hospitalizations of gunshot victims, decreasing both the human and financial toll of this violence. HVIPs meet gunshot survivors at their bedside and support them with non-medical needs that help with recovery and prevent reinjury and retaliation. #HVIPs
A strong predictor of future violent injury is having been hospitalized for a past one. Studies show HVIP participants’ reinjury rates were at least half those of hospitalized survivors who didn’t participate. These programs can save hospitals and taxpayers significant amounts.
The choice is clear: we can continue to pay for countless lives taken or altered forever by gun violence, or we can fund efforts like HVIPs, which provide survivors with the support they need to avoid reinjury. It’s a win-win. Learn more: #HVIPs everytownresearch.org/report/hospita…
