Black Theater History Day 20🎭🎶 James Earl Jones won a Tony for best lead actor twice. He earned the first for his performance in “The Great White Hope”, then a second for August Wilson's “Fences”. In addition, Jones received a 2017 Tony for lifetime achievement in the theater.

Black Theater History Day 19🎭👑 Viola Davis was the first Black actress to be nominated three times. She won her first Tony Award for "King Hedley II," and her second in "Fences." Davis also won an Oscar for reprising her role in Denzel Washington's film adaptation of "Fences."

Black Theater History Day 18 🎭💫 Harry Belafonte was an actor, singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist; he was the first black man ever to win a Tony Award for “John Murray Anderson's Almanac” in 1954.

Black Theater History Day 16 🎭👠 Miss Peppermint; a world-renowned drag queen featured on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” was also the first openly trans woman to perform on Broadway, playing the principal role in the musical “Head Over Heels.”

Black Theater History Day 14 🎭🌃 In 1947, German composer Kurt Weill and poet Langston Hughes worked together on the first major interracial Broadway collaboration: ‘Street Scene’. To ensure the authenticity of the music, Hughes introduced Weill to Harlem jazz and blues idioms.

Black Theater History Day 12 🎭🕺🏾 Today we honor the talented Geoffrey Holder: dancer, painter, director, choreographer, designer, actor, husband, and father. He won Tony Awards for Direction and Costume Design for “THE WIZ”, which won 7 Tonys overall for its time on Broadway.
