What a biological system does at any given moment is encoded by evolution, but entrained by circumstance. All of our experiments necessarily shape the behaviors we observe. This lack of useful reference point is what makes experimental biology difficult. #ComplexSystems

@CAS_ReproLab I like to say experiments tell us what our subject (protein, complex, organelle, cell etc) *can* do but not necessarily what it actually does (how it behaves) in its native cell/tissue environment.
