A new fundamentalism is emerging that demands uniformity of thought on literally everything. Second-degree separation is back. It's not enough to hold the right views and teach them consistently. You can't even be perceived as being too "cozy" with people who differ.

1. Literal interpretation: The plain, normal, or natural meaning, intent, or sense of words. When I was in seminary, this meant Israel means Israel and church means church. Though this is somewhat of a simplistic account of what I was taught, in essence it is accurate.

This is a helpful distinction with precedent in earlier eras (to check any cultural limitations of today). Don’t know if I hold his interpretation of 1 Cor. 14, but otherwise I like with this explanation.

The circumstantial ad hominem fallacy – attributing a suspect motive to a person & then attacking that motive rather than addressing the person’s argument – is deeply contrary to reason & charity. Yet it is often committed by those who loudly trumpet their rationality or charity.
