THREAD, alcohol harm 1/2: Yesterday, the Office for National Statistics released latest figures that showed 10,048 people died in 2022 directly because of alcohol. This is a 32.4% rise since pre-pandemic 2019.
2/2: These deaths were entirely preventable. Why is the government banning smoking, deaths from which are in decline, when there is no strategy whatsoever to prevent alcohol harm, which is on the rise? It's a failure in public health policy that needs to be urgently addressed
@CamillaTominey The switch from people drinking socially in a pub, to drinking at home, often alone, is the cause here. IMO.
@CamillaTominey I'd love to know your thoughts on alcohol vs. cannabis and if the UK copied our neighbours by legalising it, would you support it (even if you're against it).
@CamillaTominey It’s so hard to stop. I can barely remember an evening in the past 15 years when I haven’t. I function perfectly well but know it’s doing so much harm. Always to scared to go to my dr as he will just send me for blood tests that will scare the shit out of me.
@CamillaTominey It said going back to the office is good for you
@CamillaTominey Don't worry - Labour will probably ban it...
