Balboa's pedigree indicates he's supposed to handle 7F to one mile. The Del Mar Futurity is 7F. Second dam Hightap won races like the Dogwood and Iowa Oaks. First dam Tap of War is a full-sister to Halladay, who won the Fourstardave. I think Balboa was just short in his debut.

I took a more serious look at the Del Mar Futurity. Brant left a nice impression in his July 26 win. He went by Civil Liberty and Balboa easily on the turn and won by 5 1/4. Balboa isn't without a chance though. He broke his own maiden by 7 3/4 and could upset his stablemate.

Tommy Jo feels like the best 2-year-old filly at this point. But it's hard to tell for sure though until all the regions come together. No one will know until they all merge at the Breeders' Cup.

New Century was awful in the Gun Runner Stakes. Well that's why I don't play Kentucky Downs and just watch. No one knows who will like this odd configuration.

If New Century likes Kentucky Downs, he will be hard to beat in the Gun Runner. One mile is a good distance for him. He always seemed to lack a final winning punch at longer distances, so one mile might be perfect. But again, it's always a guess on whether a horse likes KD.

I'm not betting the Gun Runner Stakes at Kentucky Downs, but Anegada (currently 33-1) is a better horse than his last two races make it seem. He always gets stuck in traffic. I don't know if he can beat New Century. With a clear trip though, he's a superfecta candidate.

Evershed opens at 4/5 for the Old Dominion Oaks at Colonial Downs. I did write that I liked her...but I'll skip at those odds. Sure I know I can possibly key her in an exacta or double, but she would still have to win and no horse is really an absolute lock, even at 4/5.

The Del Mar Debutante is probably between Explora and Himika, but I just don't see the intrigue in the race from a handicapping / betting standpoint. Maybe if I could narrow it down to one, it'd help. But there's not enough information for me to say one is better than the other

I guess my Colonial Downs picks will be chalky, because besides Evershed, World Beater looks good in the Old Dominion Derby. With that said, I wouldn't discount Lured Away, whose best race came at 9F. There is Euro breeding deep in his pedigree. Outrunner has a minor shot too

Evershed (2-1) feels like the right filly in the Old Dominion Oaks at Colonial Downs off her second in the Saratoga Oaks Invitational. The Saratoga Oaks was a Grade 2, but it's more than likely a higher quality race than the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks Will Then ran fifth in.

Let's talk about the Old Dominion Oaks at Colonial Downs. Will Then is the only filly in this race who exits a Grade 1 race in her most recent start, but does it feel like she ran in a true Grade 1? I don't trust the Del Mar Oaks as a high quality race.

Thirsty Rebel barely missed in the Im Smokin Stakes at Del Mar by a margin that couldn't be any more than a nose. I should have given Max Ciao more credit for improving in his maiden win.

Let's go with Thirsty Rebel (3-1) in the Im Smokin Stakes at Del Mar tomorrow. The blue on TimeformUS indicates the pace might've been slow-ish, and he made a wide move and closed strong to give a nice visual impression. He was faster than Sammy Davis on the card (by a smidge).

Just took a look at the Del Mar Futurity. Not a fan of stakes races were Baffert trains 2/3 of the field. Does anyone find this race attractive from a handicapping / betting standpoint?

I don't like to play Kentucky Downs because I feel it's too much of a guess to figure out which horses like the strange configuration. So I don't know if I have any picks for this weekend. Maybe I'll see if anything stands out at Del Mar.
