4/ not push therapists to express or perform “empathy” in place of the actual *experience* of empathy We can’t will ourselves to experience empathy. We can only create the conditions for it to emerge, via the work we do with our patients & the work we do in our own psychotherapy

There’s a difference between guilt & remorse Guilt can be egocentric—a condemnation of one part of self by another, absent connection or empathy with the person we wronged Remorse arises from empathy with the other’s pain One leads to emotional growth. The other, not so much
