Sometimes I think "polarized" is the wrong word. It suggests that we need to aim for some magical and reasonable middle ground. But very often, the "somewhere in the middle" isn't rational, evidence-informed, or right. The Earth isn't kinda oval.
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor Well actually Tim, love what you do but this time … erm you are a bit off, the earth is kinda oval
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor "But very often, the "somewhere in the middle" isn't rational, evidence-informed, or right." Agreed
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor "science-informed consensus" is an awful contrast to "lie". They're not even opposites, or particularly commensurable. The phrasing is typically used by authoritarians who can't back up their "science-informed" positions, like lockdowns, child mutilation, myriad "crises", etc.
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor While your underlying point is correct, the shape of the Earth was possibly not the best example, since it is, in fact, kinda oval. Though it’s definitely much, much closer to a sphere than a flat surface, it’s actually an ellipsoid, which is basically a 3D oval.
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor “Both-sides” media reporting is an injustice when one side is factually wrong. For example, climate change was treated as a “debate” for many years, giving people the false impression that there was not yet a scientific consensus.
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor Who is pimping you and @jonathanstea?
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor The Confucius philosophy of "The Doctrine of the Mean" often mistaken as middle ground too
@CaulfieldTim @jonathanstea @RyanMarino @McGillOSS @StanKutcher @doritmi @keithkloor “Science informed consensus” or “lie” - what a list of options. Great work on contributing to polarization. And let’s not forget that “science informed consensus” did at one point believe the earth was flat and that leeches were an effective treatment for almost everything
