In a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire, She carv'd thee for her seal, and meant thereby,
To the moaning and the groaning of the bells. Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.
And think that these weak lines are written by him— Bearing thy heart, which I will keep so chary
Far down within the dim West, So flatter I the swart-complexion'd night,
All the heavens, seem to twinkle That 'gainst thy self thou stick'st not to conspire,
By the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells-- Neither in inward worth nor outward fair,
How they ring out their delight! And every fair from fair sometime declines,
The truest—the most fervently devoted, And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
From the thunder, and the storm— Whereon the stars in secret influence comment;
In a strange city lying alone Be, as thy presence is, gracious and kind,
Up shadowy long-forgotten bowers And see thy blood warm when thou feel'st it cold.
Sit in a theatre, to see But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,
There shrines and palaces and towers For at a frown they in their glory die.
In the icy air of night! For all that beauty that doth cover thee,
From the lightning in the sky Who lets so fair a house fall to decay,
Of all who owe thee most—whose gratitude To find where your true image pictur'd lies,
From the rust within their throats Will play the tyrants to the very same
With a desperate desire, Were an all-eating shame, and thriftless praise.
In the silence of the night, By oft predict that I in heaven find:
(Time-eaten towers that tremble not!) A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
