The jet stream will push north of the United States later this month while intensifying over the Pacific. This is a recipe for widespread, unusually warm conditions across North America as Pacific air blows in. There's a strong marine heat wave in the North Pacific, too.

A concerning pattern heading into and beyond the peak of hurricane season: a forming La Niña in the Pacific and unusually warm water across the Atlantic. The Caribbean and Gulf are especially warm, which are common areas for storms to track during October.

Next week, a tropical system may track toward the Caribbean. Recent ECMWF runs have shown some increasing risk for the islands, with a storm that's slower to strengthen taking a more southerly track. Rising air is forecast to build across the Atlantic in mid-to-late September.

People in hurricane-prone areas should use the current lull to prepare, because it won’t last. By mid-to-late September, a significant pulse of convection is forecast to develop over the Atlantic and Africa, raising storm risks.

Upper trough pumping in pleasant and dry air out of Canada much of this week gets reinforced by another one heading into the holiday weekend, so cooler-than-normal temperatures abound! If we don't get anymore rain in DC this month, it will be DC's driest August on record!

We're still technically drought free, but the third driest first three weeks of August on record for DC (2002 & 1884 the two drier) have brought back "abnormally dry" conditions to parts of the DC region. We have not even had a quarter inch of rain at DCA this month!

Sinking air will overtake the Atlantic during late August, pressing pause on hurricane risks. By early-to-mid September, the return of rising air will bring rising storm chances, though there may initially be a convective competition with the eastern Pacific.

I would be lying if I said I was not LOVING all the blue on these maps through the duration of August. A number of models suggest that DC may not see another 90°F day the rest of the month, though Sunday could be close!
