As a teacher, do you practice what you teach? Well, most of us think or hope that we do and would say “Yes!” However, that may not be the case. Check out this post at: tinyurl.com/y4kvu9lm
So much truth in this article! There’s so much uncertainty in teaching mathematics. Hard to teach students to love math when you don’t see the love your self. Explains why a high percentage of teachers just follow the textbook and flip to the next page everyday!

Yes! Yes! I have been saying this but most don’t understand!

I think “whole” might be the worst word to use to describe a set. It works for a pizza, but not for 12 birds in a tree. When teachers switch to “total” kids all of a sudden get it. Parts and total when a set, parts and whole when one!

Totally agree! Our brains are wired to do easiest 1st, key word posters only teach Ss to look around and never think! We must force Ss to use or apply what they already know to develop relational thinking!

Teaching above developmental levels harms conceptual understanding. So much can be learned from structured, purposeful play!

Students have a hard time putting themselves in the problems story due to the lack of role playing in most classrooms. They must understand the situation before developing a plan or strategy to solve it. Problem solving is much more than a calculation!

So true, children must work with these structured materials until they see numbers visually in their mind!

Amazing how much math content can be developed with such simple materials!
On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of learning in math over the summer. Yikes! Help prevent summer slide by finding opportunities to explore mathematics with your children in fun and engaging ways. Visit kyfamilymath.org for games, resources, and ideas!
I totally agree!! Students should be counting with objects, DAILY! Have them take daily inventories of classroom objects. Dress those naked numbers with labels of everyday items. What's lacking in our math classrooms? QUANITITY

Pre-K and Kinder students should be playing with BLOCKS daily! SO many students have no problem solving skills because they are not allowed to play with things. Playing can be rigorous as well!!!
