Near the end of World War II, Minneapolis industrialist {and civil engineer} John B. Hawley, Jr.’s Northern Ordnance Company purchased oil lands in 18 states including 17,000 acres in Pennsylvania. By 1946, he experimented with designs for electric pumping jacks.
